YBAA/CPYB Co-Hosts for 2017 American Boating Congress

Abc May 2017 Logo

Since 2013 YBAA/CPYB have been Co-Hosts of the American Boating Congress in Washington DC. As Co-Hosts we are actively involved with the planning and implementation of this extremely important legislative event and we are committed to encouraging YBAA members to participate. Last year, YBAA President, David Benson and I attended the event as the sole representatives from YBAA. This year, 2017 YBAA President, JP Skov and I will attend and we would love to see a much larger turnout of YBAA members as it is important that we are visible as active participants at ABC.

CPYB Welcomes Massachusetts Maritime Academy as the Newest CPYB Sponsor

Mma PicMassachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) is proud to be a supporter of the National Certified Professional Yacht Broker program as a CPYB Bronze Sponsor. We have been a YBAA Affiliate Member since 1994 and with the CPYB sponsorship we further recognize the role that yacht sales professionals play in the donation of high quality vessels and the eventual resale of these yachts. These sales ultimately help to financially support the programs at MMA including educational scholarships and training programs.

John Adey The national Certified Professional Yacht Broker (CPYB) program, supported and  sponsored by all seven broker associations in North America, recently welcomed  John Adey, President of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) as a    member of their Certification Advisory Council.

Small Boats and Superyachts Pull April Brokerage Lower

YachtWorld logo

The number and value of sales in the U.S. yacht brokerage market declined in April, compared to April 2016. The drop in volume was principally due to fewer sales of boats under 35 feet while the decrease in value was entirely due to the sale of fewer and less expensive superyachts.

The Value of Achieving CPYB Certification

Don Finkle

Those of you who are not yet Certified Professional Yacht Brokers (CPYB) may be like I was some years ago, skeptical of the value in return for the effort and expense, or maybe a bit intimidated by taking a three hour exam.  In my case, I felt that because I had been a successful broker for decades, I should not have to prove my ability by taking an exam.  However, I came to realize that I was becoming an outlier as more and more of my peers saw the value of achieving the CPYB designation.  It also became apparent that those who were certified were looked at more favorably by fellow brokers and more importantly by consumers purchasing boats. It was time to set aside my pride and begin to study for the exam. Despite my forty years of experience I found that there were many things in the study material that I did not know. I am now more confident as a broker thanks to the time devoted to study and learning new things.  In fact, I recently reviewed The Guide from front to back and found the refresher to be helpful.
